Freedom: The Foundation of Christian Libertarianism DVD
“Freedom DVD is an excellent video on the foundations of liberty that I cannot recommend highly enough. If you have any illusions to statism, be prepared to have your worldview overturned.” — Jerry Johnson, President, NiceneCouncil.com
“Give me liberty or give me death!” Patrick Henry’s famous declaration not only helped launch the War for Independence, it also perfectly summarized the mindset that gave birth to, and sustained, the unprecedented experiment in Christian liberty that was America. The freedom our Founders envisioned was not freedom from suffering, want, or hard work. Nor was it freedom to indulge every appetite or whim without restraint—that would merely be servitude to a different master. No, the Founders’ passion was to live free before God, unfettered by the chains of autocracy, shackles that slowly but inexorably bind men when the governments they fashion fail to recognize and uphold freedom’s singular, foundational truth: that all men are created in the image of God, and are thereby co-equally endowed with the right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
America’s Founders further understood that the human heart tends towards envy and sloth; that some people will pervert the right to pursue happiness into a guarantee of happiness; that many will willingly feed “Leviathan”— intrusive government that promises, however thinly, to erase those difficulties and inequities of life that are necessarily the messy side of freedom. Ben Franklin issued an early warning against this impulse, one that has become epidemic: “Any people that would give up liberty for a little temporary safety deserves neither liberty nor safety.”
Tragically, the principles that guided Henry, Franklin, and the rest of the Founders have become a distant memory, if even that. The majority of us have squandered our capacity to reason like free men because we have lost our lexicon. We have forgotten the very grammar of freedom.
Lately, however, there are signs that many Americans are awakening from their socialism-induced slumber. The rise of the Tea Party and the popularity of incongruous candidates like Ron Paul testify to the stirrings of a latent memory of freedom. Nevertheless, as we have attended events and rallies, conducted interviews, and surfed the sea of writings and internet postings surrounding this phenomenon, we have seen that there is a clear and present danger of “healing the hurt only slightly” (Jeremiah 6:14); of using band aids when a tourniquet—if not a resurrection—is needed.
“Lazarus, come forth!” Jesus once called to a dead man. This presentation is a similar call, not to one but many. By reintroducing the principles of freedom that gave birth to America, it is our prayer that Jesus, the true and only ruler over the nations, will once again be our acknowledged Sovereign, that we may again know and exult in the great truth that “where the Spirit is LORD, there is liberty” (2 Cor. 3:17).
