Berkhof’s sections begin with a brief outline followed by a comprehensive look at the characteristics, authorship, composition, and canonical significance of each New Testament book. Preceding his discussion of the Gospels, Berkhof discusses the nature and inspiration of the Gospels in general, and introduces the Johannine problem, in which the first three Synoptic Gospels are set apart from the latter Gospel, John. Berkhof’s Introduction relies on the findings of a wide range of New Testament scholars including the early Church Fathers. Berkhof’s references are very easy to navigate which makes Introduction to the New Testament a prime text for student study. In fact, Berkhof intended this work to be utilized in the classroom at Calvin Theological Seminary where he taught for nearly 30 years until becoming its president in 1944.

Chronicling the suffering and brutal deaths of those who have sacrificed their lives for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, John Foxe captured the God-given, Spirit-inspired courage of these noble souls. Though sometimes difficult to read because of the inhumane cruelty depicted in its pages, the images which truly endure are those of the victorious faithfulness, by the grace of God, of these heroes of the faith. Why read this book? The stories within these pages are not only supremely inspiring but also educational as to the identity, character, and modus operandi of an apostate, false church. We have benefited immeasurably from the wonderful witness of these martyred saints, which not only helped many of our predecessors accept Christ, but also helped the true church to be stronger and purer.

What does church discipline have to do with the separation of church and state? At first glance, they seem like a strange combination: one, a relatively obscure church procedure, and the other, a hotly contested legal and political issue. But they have been forced together as a growing number of churches find themselves in court.

Behind these court cases is an almost forgotten history of the relationship between church and state. In A Tale of Two Governments, Robert Renaud and Lael Weinberger tell this story, interweaving history and theology with current events and the latest court cases. A Tale of Two Governments is for every American who cares about religious freedom, for every pastor who wants to wisely navigate the legal minefields, and for every Christian who cares about the integrity of the church.

“This book stands in a gap that I’ve long hoped to see occupied.”
- from the foreword by JOHN MACARTHUR

“A Tale of Two Governments is superb. It will be a very useful resource. I know nothing else like it.”
- THOMAS ASCOL / Pastor, Grace Baptist Church Executive Director, Founders Ministries

“I highly recommend this book as a timely reminder of why American law (or any other) should not forget that there are two kingdoms God established to govern our world.”
- SCOTT BRISTER / Former Justice, Supreme Court of Texas

“This book is a great contribution to educating people about our freedoms—and particularly the importance of church autonomy to religious freedom and the faith.”
- KELLY SHACKELFORD / President and Chief Counsel, Liberty Institute

“In this fine, succinct work, the authors lead readers through a maze with simplicity and clarity. What we now have is a work that reviews the biblical, historical, and legal propriety of biblical church discipline. Every church needs this in its library; and every church staff owes it to its flock to read and acquaint itself with this fine work.”

What do Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Oneness Pentecostals and a host of other theological cults all have in common? A tacit denial of the Biblical doctrine of the Trinity. And what may be worse is the Christian Church is culpable in causing the further proliferation of this denial.

The Biblical and historical doctrine of the Trinity receives very little attention in our modern Church age. In fact, many Christians, when pressed to define the term, employ confusing language at best or historically recognized heretical terms at worst.

It has not always been this way. The early church believed that a wrong view of God would, of necessity, lead to a wrong view of the Gospel. Therefore, false views could not, they reasoned, if we love God and His people, be allowed to go unchallenged.

And that is why this new series from NiceneCouncil.com, Tri-Unity: The Biblical Doctrine of God, featuring Dr. Michael Haykin, is of the utmost importance.

During the next few hours, Dr. Haykin will take the student on a journey through the Bible and the history of the early Church explaining how and why the doctrine of the Trinity is essential in order to have a proper view of God and to give one the tools for an orthodox world and life view.

“Years ago, while speaking at a conference I asked the host church if we could pass out a survey form. Attendees were to answer a series of questions and write a brief definition of the Trinity. Much to the pastor’s dismay, 93% of the answers received gave a heretical definition – one of either Arianism or Modalism. God help us!” — Jerry Johnson, President, NiceneCouncil.com

About the Speaker

Dr. Michael A.G. Haykin is currently Professor of Church History and Biblical Spirituality at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Haykin has a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Toronto, a Master of Religion and a Th.D. in Church History from Wycliffe College and the University of Toronto.

He is the author of a number of books, including The Spirit of God: The Exegesis of 1 and 2 Corinthians in the Pneumatomachian Controversy of the Fourth Century; Jonathan Edwards: The Holy Spirit in Revival; and most recently, The God Who Draws Near.

Does even an antichrist government have a right to command meticulous fidelity? Is it a sin against God to break the speed limit? Was the founding generation of America rebelling against God when they fought for independence from England?

Or did Thomas Jefferson get it right when he said, “Resistance to Tyrants is Obedience to God?”

In this 50 page book, Christian pastor, author, and patriot, Gordan Runyan brings his conversational, often humorous style and characteristic clarity to bear on these issues. The reader will feel both challenged and encouraged to stand up for true liberty.

The first section of the book is a close examination of the controversial text of Romans 13:1-7, which many have used to teach unconditional obedience to tyrants and despots. Is that really what it says?

Early Christian contemplation on the Trinity is one of the most fascinating intellectual and spiritual conversations in the history of western thought.

In this new work by Dr. Michael A.G. Haykin on this bedrock doctrine of the Christian Faith, follow some of the greatest figures in the Ancient Church — men like the missionary theologian Ireanaeus of Lyons, the African bishop Athanasius and the monastic reformer Basil of Caesarea — as they study the Bible, grapple with how to talk about the Triune God and determine what exactly this means for the Christian life.

Their thinking is just as relevant now as it was when they first put pen to papyrus.

“What a rich story this is, and one the reader will understand and appreciate much better because of Haykin’s masterful work.” — Bruce A. Ware, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY

“Michael Haykin’s, with his impeccable scholarship, has produced a short, readable account that will help many to appreciate these struggles and to grow in their knowledge of God. Buy it, read it, give it to a friend.” — Robert Letham, Director of Research, Senior Tutor in Systematic and Historical Theology, Wales Evangelical School of Theology

“In a clear and learned way, Michael Haykin connects the Bible to Athanasius and the Cappadocian Fathers…” — Carl R. Trueman, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, PA

That’s what God told the prophet Hosea to tell Israel in the eighth century B.C. (Hosea 8:7), and that’s what John Calvin told the citizens of Geneva in A.D. 1556. Unlike many Christians in the western world today, Calvin was convinced that God is alive and active in history. Nations that pleased God by faith-filled obedience to His revealed will would be blessed by God, while those who angered God by rebellious disobedience to His laws would receive curses from Him.

These blessings and curses are not only spiritual, but are also social, agricultural, political, meteorological, and in fact are manifested in every area of national life. Thus, Calvin called the people of Geneva to walk a straight line before God, so that He might give them peace and not war, prosperity and not famine, life and not death.

Calvin showed from the book of Deuteronomy that God has set up a covenant with His people, and that God enforces that covenant. The principles of that covenant are every bit as relevant after the cross as they were before it, Calvin insisted.

The Protestant Reformation transformed the western world because it held to a belief in a living, active, covenant-enforcing God. If we want to recover our cultures from ruin, we must return to Biblical principles of life, and to the God of the covenant.

John Calvin preached through the book of Deuteronomy on weekdays from March, 1555, to July, 1556. In all, he preached 200 sermons, expounding the book in detail and making applications to the social and political life of Geneva, as well as to the personal lives of her citizens.

The fifteen sermons selected here have not been seen in English since they were first translated and published in 1583. In this volume, editor James B. Jordan has revised Arthur Golding’s translation into modern English, making Calvin’s words come alive with renewed impact.

These sermons are as timely today as when they were first preached. Cultures that depart from God fall under His judgment. So says the Bible, and so said John Calvin. Cultures that obey God, however, receive His blessing. If there is a message that the Western world needs to hear at the present time, surely this is it.

As the Reformation began to consolidate in Geneva, John Calvin preached 200 sermons on the book of Deuteronomy in order to show the people the kind of Christian republic God wanted them to have. Calvin’s sermons were published in English in the 1580′s, and went through three editions. They have been highly influential in the development of English and American Christian culture. This book contains 15 sermons, those on Deuteronomy 27 and 28, which discuss the blessings and curses of the covenant. Rendered into modern English, these sermons are not only valuable in showing the though of one of the most profound shapers of the modern world, but they are also powerful reading, and will be of tremendous value to pastors, seminarians, and teachers.
